Thoughts on Thanksgiving~2010

Thanksgiving 2010 . . . and a Happy Thanksgiving to my readers.

As a Christian the first element of thanks must be to the God of the Universe for life, not merely corporeal life, but the gift of life everlasting through His Son, Jesus Christ for those that trust in Jesus and accept this free gift (Ephesians 2:8-9).[i]

Thanks to God’s providence in the recent elections America and her people have another chance at the life endowed by our Creator and established in our founding documents by our God fearing forefathers. They did not fear just any God, but the one true God.

Not the false god’s of other religions who offer no salvific pathway and no savior. There is no sure promise of life with an Infinite God in Hinduism, Buddhism, or Islam. Nor is the god of Paganism / Wicca or Gaia true. While becoming more mainstream culturally, the god of the Christian cults like Mormonism or Jehovah’s Witnesses lead only to death.

While government may be the god of certain deceived and deluded people of the left, governments were instituted by God for the protection of humans which is reflected in both the Declaration of Independence and America’s Constitution. Henceforth America was not made to glorify and empower government. Our government, the American Government, was allowed and established to glorify America and her people. It is the case a solely secular government without God is sterile. It is man-centered, humanistic atheism at its core.

Those first settlers were seeking sanctuary to worship the One True God without government interference. After a difficult trip they landed on our shores and gave grateful thanks to God for the bounty and grace He had extended to them. They invited the Indians to join them in celebrating God. They were not thanking the Indians that the first Thanksgiving, rather thanking God for His shield of protection that landed them safely.

Unlike the wishful thinking and totally erroneous assertions by the current occupant of the Whitehouse, America is a Christian nation. Or at least we were, though now we are infected with postmodernism and some say we are even a post-Christian nation. But we were founded as not only a Christian nation, but as a missional nation to spread the Good News of God’s salvation offered to all men who will trust in Jesus Christ. That was the acknowledged

Indeed our first President, George Washington, understood this and indeed honored the God of Christianity with the Presidential Proclamation of Thanksgiving for God’s bounty and providence. I did not learn that in history when I was in school, although it could have been taught on one of the days I was napping, and most assuredly it is not taught today in public schools.

Nevertheless it is a fact of history. Here is what President Washington proclaimed:

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Happy Thankgiving

[i] For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast (ESV).
